West Norwood Feast, Sunday Suppers & More

A Food Lover with a Stomach Virus.. is the subtitle of today’s Friday post.

This week I was unfortunately attacked my a greedy stomach virus that decided to make me hurl profusely at my train station at about 6.45pm on Tuesday evening. Whilst passers-by probably thought I was some young drunk girl who couldn’t handle her drink..

Anyway it was not pleasant, probably from a fools combination of chorizo, apple and orange juice. And resulted in Yummy Choo Eats.. did not eat for about 2 days. I don’t class eating crackers, all versions of Baxter’s soup and Lucozade a favourable diet…but maybe my stomach needed a re-charge.

I am getting better and the appetite is slowly flowing back and I can now look at twitter feeds, instagram food pics, magazines again! And hooray it’s nearly the weekend, lots of food events happening in London. We have Cheese & Wine Fest and Chocolate Unwrapped.. but I’m sure there is more!

Here’s a round of the last week or so! I visited the monthly West Norwood Feast, being local to me, It was about time I visited the market, mainly to check out the local food far on offer. Located in the church yard, right near West Norwood Station, a round-up of about 10-15 stalls from hot food, cakes, brunches, coffee, sweets..

Fleisch Mob- Cooking up some rare breed pork schnitzel sandwiches on sourdough, with relishes and salad, they actually inspired me to make my own chicken schnitzel a couple of days after, was delectably crisp.

Check out that golden crumb..

I decided to get my lunch at this stall, cooking up a huge flat pan of creamy potatoes, coated in white melting Reblochon cheese, piquant, robust flavours with bacon pieces originating from the French Alps.

It’s the sort of food you need on a cold, yet sunlit day, comfort food at its best..

Fiendish and Goode Cakes , miniature naughty treats on display..

The Tartlettes, two lovely ladies selling an amazing array of decorated cakes and tarts.. next time will have to try them out!

The Real Food Festival- Horn Ok Please with their unusual textured, yet sweet, peppery and crisp Bhel Puri, mixed with some Holy Fck Sauce from the Ribman for that extra spice dusted street food treat.

Caravan Kings Cross for Lunch- Burata, Caponata, Basil Oil, silky cheese, pungent flavoured caponata, mellow and herbal oil

Caravan, Kings Cross- Jalapeno Cornbread, with Chipolte butter with lime juice and fresh coriander sprigs. Golden crusted cornbread, soft middle, spiced chilli butter, soaking all that goodness up, contrasting lime for the zing and coriander leaves gives fresh vibrancy.

Caravan Kings Cross- Scallop Ceviche

Caravan Kings Cross- Deep fried golden duck egg, on baba ghanoush, fresh sprigs of coriander…perfect and complimentary combination.

The Sun & 13 Cantons- Pub in Soho home to the Mama’s Jerk Pop Up, we went down during the week, hungry friends in tow and was fed sweet potato wedges, pork sausage jerk wraps, chicken jerk wraps, spicy sauces, soft plantain and Sweet Tooth Factory’s amazing chocolate rum cake, that finished us off for good! Great location, hosts, buzzy pub, satisfying grub, affordable and by the hospitable Mama’s Jerk lovely lads. Check it out this month.

I made at home a Chicken and Papaya curry, with a dash of coconut milk, worth the wait and papaya is a perfect addition to curries with a twist, recipe will be published here soon!

Part of the Sunday Feasts collective, I visited Asma’s Darjeeling Express Supper Club called the British Raj, fitting name for the food she almost methodically churned out that evening. The highlight for me was the beautifully spiced Malai Prawn Curry and the tender Spiced Lamb Chops literally falling off the bone. So much food, finished off with irresistible kheer, ground rice in a melody of milk, cardamom and spices served from an earthenware dish,  a lovely evening and welcoming host!

Finally, a few small bits that occurred this week that’s worth mentioning!
